Home

Well, I am officially home for the summer and it feels pretty good. Unless there’s another flood situation in which case, I’m booking it the hell out of here.

Since it’s been awhile since I’ve been home, I decided this edition of KB Thinks Music should focus on songs about “home.” So, with no further ado, here are this week’s musical selections.

Something Old
John Denver- “Country Roads Take Me Home”
If you haven’t driven on a highway in the middle of nowhere (aka 95% of South Dakota) I feel sorry for you. And yes... assholes, I know this song is about West Virginia. Don't care.

Something New
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros- “Home”
So… this song isn’t exactly new but if you’ll recall, when I started “KB Thinks Music,” I said everything would by my call and if you didn’t like it well… you can [insert vulgar insult here]. Anyway, I’m kind of in love with this song.

Something Borrowed
“Homebird”- Foy Vance
This song isn’t “borrowed” in the sense that it is a cover but in the sense that I am “borrowing” it from someone else. In this case, Grey’s Anatomy. I know this is sort of cheating because I just did music from Grey’s last week but… I like this song so I’m going to use it.

Something Blue
“Welcome Home”- Radical Face
Funny story: being the asshole that I am, I introduced this song to one of my friends at the very end of the summer when everyone was leaving for college. After having a farewell dinner, said friend drove home listening to this song and crying. I think that qualifies as a “blue” song. Also, this is kind of my Karen Smith moment. “Gretchen, I’m sorry I laughed at you that time you got diarrhea at Barnes and Noble. And I’m sorry for telling everyone about it. And I’m sorry for repeating it now.”

Something Random
“Honey, I’m Home”- Shania Twain
“Honey, I’m home and I had a hard day, pour me a cold one and oh, by the way… rub my feet, give me something to eat, pick me up my favorite treat.” Ah, Shania Twain. Telling women how we should live our lives since 1997.

Grey's Anatomy Music

I’m still recovering from another DEVESTATING season finale of Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve been watching this show for years and we have a very love-hate relationship with each other. I love the show because it is awesome but I hate the show because it continually rips my heart out and stomps on it. Last week, I had to part with a beloved character who Shonda Rhimes (the heartless show-runner) NEEDLESSLY KILLED OFF. I’m pretty bitter about it. Anyway, it’s got me thinking about the awesome music moments the show has given us over the last 8 seasons. Not to mention the ridiculously attractive Patrick Dempsey.

Something Old
Tegan and Sara- “Fix You Up”
Someone called into question my love of Tegan and Sara the other day. She thought my near constant references to them in blog were sarcasm (which, knowing me, is understandable). However, I was not joking about my Tegan and Sara love and, luckily for me, Grey’s pretty much used Tegan and Sara as the house band for Season 1. In 5 of the 9 episodes in Season 1, a Tegan and Sara song was used. And it was awesome. Here's the whole song first, and then the scene it was used in (just in case you're interested)

Something New
The Naked and Famous- “Bells”
This song is from an episode a few weeks ago where, as per usual, sh!t goes down. There is no show on television that has better music than Grey’s and pretty much every week they introduce me to something new which I download… as soon as I’ve finished bawling my eyes out.

Something Borrowed
“My Funny Valentine”
This song, according to Wikipedia (so you know it must be true) is from a 1937 musical but since then, it has been covered by tons of people. My personal favorite is the Miles Davis version (because I’m oh so cultured). Anyway, on Grey’s, Richard’s wife Adele is suffering from Alzheimer’s. When she freaks out and can’t remember anything, Richard sings it to her and it is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. Again, here is the original followed by one of the saddest things ever.

Something Blue
Andrew Belle- “In My Veins”
I’m going to be honest; after watching the Season 6 finale of Grey’s, I wasn’t sure I could go on living. There was a shooter in the hospital and it was the scariest/most gut-wrenching thing ever. My roommate and I still almost tear up when we talk about this episode.

Something Random
Kanye West- “Steetlights”
Hey, remember when Kanye put out that album where he didn’t rap? I do and I loved this song which I first heard on an episode of Grey’s. Considering the fact that 1) Kanye is singing, not rapping and 2) I wouldn’t typically think to put a rap artist in a TV Medical drama, this definitely constitutes “Random”

Now, do yourself a favor and go watch every singe episode of Grey's ever.

Here's How This Works

I’m very excited for the first ever KB Thinks Music!

Every Monday, I’m going to post a selection of 5 songs that are helping me get through my week in the hopes that they help you get through yours.

I’m sure we’ve all heard the wedding tradition of “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” and I figured what better way to pick music for this blog than under these criteria. (With an added category of “Something Random” to make it an even 5 songs)

I assume you guys will all cut me some slack if, for instance, my “something new” isn’t actually a brand new track. All these songs are just in relation to me. And if you don’t like it, go make your own blog, asshole. Also, the “Something Borrowed” category can mean one of two things. Either it is a kick ass cover of a song or it is a song I was introduced to by someone else. Either way, we’re calling it “borrowed.”

Last week, I was slightly obsessed with gay rights. In case you couldn’t tell.

Anyway, my roommate and I decided it would be a good idea to start off “KB Thinks Music” with some of our favorite songs from gay artists.

Something Old
Elton John- “Tiny Dancer”
I dare you to find a better song than this. Can’t be done.

Something New
An Horse- “Horizons”
My favorite (and your new favorite) Australian duo made up of lesbian Kate Cooper and the delightfully awkward Damon Cox. They released their new album in 2011 but this song is from their 2009’s “Rearrange Beds”

Something Borrowed
Tegan and Sara- “Turnpike Ghost”
You and I both know how much I love Tegan and Sara. They have a bunch of good songs but honestly one of my favorites is their cover of this Steel Train song.

Something Blue
First Aid Kit- “Ghost Town”
First Aid Kit is a Swedish folk band that also enjoys head banging. Seriously. I saw them live and they were going crazy. Anyway, one of the sisters is a lesbian which is a great excuse for me to introduce them to you guys (if you don't know them already)

Something Random
The Village People “Macho Man”
How do you have a music list by gay artists without putting the Village People on it? Enjoy! Also, sorry for the fact that this video is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS

And remember, love is love.
